What are the benefits of Home Health Care?
One of the primary benefits of Home Health Care is that care is provided to the patient within the comfort and familiar surroundings of his/her home with support from family and friends.
By delivering care directly at a patient’s home, expensive hospital bills are avoided.
In the case of elder care, Home Health services can also be provided at an adult foster home, assisted living or long term nursing home.
The added benefits for seniors include:
• Support , guidance and education to help manage their condition
• Speedy recovery from illness or injury
• Regaining independence over time at home
• Becoming as self-sufficient as possible
• Maintaining current condition or level of functions
• Slowing the decline of serious conditions
What does Homebound mean?
Homebound means that a patient’s condition prevents him or her from leaving home or leaving home requires a taxing effort and the assistance of another person/s or medical equipment such as a walker, wheelchair, crutches or a cane.
Who qualifies for Home Health?
In order to qualify for Home Health, the patient:
• Should be Homebound and this must be certified by the physician recommending home health
• Must be under the care of a doctor who orders home health services
• Should require intermittent skilled nursing, physical or occupational therapy
Is Home Health Care covered by Medicare?
Home Health Care is covered by Medicare; a patient must meet the following requirements:
• Be considered “Homebound” according to the Medicare definition
• Require part-time or intermittent skilled care to improve, maintain, prevent, or further slow the progression of an existing condition
• Be under the care of a medical doctor who prescribes home health care (a patient must have documentation of an in-person visit with said doctor (Face to Face Encounter) either three months before starting home health care or within one month of when home health care begins)
Medicare covers skilled nursing care and rehabilitative services, which may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Depending on a patient’s needs, additional services like medical social services, durable medical equipment, medical supplies, and other in-home services may also be covered.
